Product Owner

ChefSteps is looking for a Product Owner to help lead a new line of business. The PO  will connect independent ranchers with ChefSteps users, offering them direct access to high-quality meat and ingredients at great prices.

ChefSteps is a fast-growing, Seattle-based cooking and technology startup dedicated to inspiring home cooks. We design products that help people get better at cooking and inspire creativity and experimentation in the home kitchen. We’re on a mission to get the world cooking, and we think one of the best ways to do that is to increase access to great ingredients at great prices.

As you work to build the ChefSteps Marketplace, you will be doing a little of everything, but you should specialize in one thing that distinguishes you from other candidates. What should that be? Your specialty could be data and finance—you’re a whiz at forecasting and tracking sales, as well as knowing how many products we need to meet demand in a new market and how many vendors we need to meet that number. Your specialty could be logistics—you know that last mile is always the hardest, so you’ve become an expert at getting a delivery safely and quickly to a customer’s door. Your specialty could be classic developer skills—you can work your magic to automate all the things that slow us down or glue together disparate pieces of infrastructure to get us through the next quarter so we can continue testing all our crazy ideas.

No matter your area of expertise, this role requires grit, determination, and comfort with ambiguity. Working on product at ChefSteps is unique, to say the least. You’ll get your hands dirty often: that means everything from showing up at a sale to deliver meat directly to homing in on the vision and business potential of the product. Above all, the Marketplace team needs someone who can get around the startup world fluidly. We’re a team within a team, and working across organizations is essential to our success, so you should be all about systematic discovery and execution.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Understand and report the metrics of the business
  • Work to define the scope of product releases and create product roadmaps along with the team
  • Engage in customer development from both sides: get to know the customers and report back so we can iterate until we’ve found the sweet spot
  • Constantly improve processes within the company to ensure efficient communication and delivery of product

  • An eye for design—you should know what a good product is
  • A strong background in economics or finance
  • DIY ethic
  • Skill with numbers—you should know when they do and don’t matter, and be able to tell a story with them that is convincing and truthful
  • A love of cooking and eating, and a passion for buying and selling meat
